Briard Nomenclature
The Briard is an ancient French breed of herding dog. Many years ago, the French devised a naming system for this breed. This nomenclature applies a certain letter of the alphabet to each year. In 1973 this system was revised to recycle every 20 years. To do so, 6 letters were dropped. This 20 year Briard naming cycle excludes the following letters: K - Q - W - X - Y - Z
Not every Briard owner or Briard breeder apply this nomenclature to the dogs that they own and/or have bred. In many European countries, litters are named according to that litter. If it is the first litter for that breeder, than the letter "A" is used to name all of the puppies within that litter. Their second litter puppies will have names beginning with a "B", their third litter a "C", on so on.
To provide some clarity for this Briard Nomenclature, the following chart has been compiled. This chart will show which letter of the alphabet will be used for each year. To use this chart effectively, follow the directions below.
